AppleSauce - Cookie Nana (Kinda)
Ingredients: (this makes enough for one pint jar)
4 Cups Apples (peeled & chopped) 1/2 Cup Water 1/4 Cup Sugar 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla 1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon Nutmeg Instructions: 1. Cook apples with water & sugar in a medium saucepan 2. Once the apples are soft add vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg 3. Mash if desired Food Preservation: This activity highlights a process that I feel is a lost art, canning. Canning is a means of preserving food. Our applesauce would last for approximately two weeks in the refrigerator, but when properly canned can last for two years without refrigeration. Describe the canning process. What are the tools we need? What steps do we take? Why do we can things? How do we know that we canned it properly? |
